Shark finning
Why? Shark finning has been going on for years and it continues to get more and more popular for things like Shark Fin soup. It is a symbol of wealth and served as a sign of respect. Trafficking drugs is the only other business that rivals in profit. It is easy to get the money and anywhere from 30 to 70 billion sharks are killed each year for this. Since sharks are a main predator in keeping the ecosystem balanced having them killed off effects the health of other marine life and the regulating of other sea creatures. Without sharks we would have algae overproduction and not enough oxygen to breathe. The problems are endless, yet people continue to fin sharks for their own benefit. They do it for money and for fame. They do it because the restrictions on sharks are not all that bad and the media portrays sharks as reckless creatures.

Costa Rica Shark finning Shark Finning is common in Costa Rica. It is the place where it all happens. Taiwan donated millions of dollars to Puntarenas, Costa Rica for bridges, buildings, and highways simply to get access to the sharks. As the sharks disappear the wildlife continues to decrease and the oceans become more and more deserted. Long line fishing also causes a lot of harm to the sharks killing many each year. It is common to take just the fin from the shark and then throw back the body which causes suffocation and a painful slow death to the shark. This is a type of abuse and a waste of perfectly good meat from the rest of the shark. Shark Finning is probably the most successful but gruesome type of commercial fishing out there with not enough punishment for the actions.
