Circle hooks have emerged as a new technology that improves the lives of fisherman and fish alike. The shape of the hook prevents the barb from being gut hooked. 90 percent of the time circle hooks catch the fish right in the lip which keeps the fish relatively unharmed and makes it easy for the fisherman to de-hook the fish. They are also more effective at catching fish. Studies done on sailfish show that circle hooks are 1.83 times more effective at landing fish than J hooks. 83 percent of sailfish caught with a circle hook were hooked in the mouth and only 27 percent with the J hook. 46 percent of sailfish caught with a j hook were deep throat hooked with J hook whereas only 2 percent with a circle hook. Circle hooks reduce deep hooking and promote live release. Bill fish tournaments have even begun promoting the use of circle hooks. In federal waters throughout the state of Florida circle are required for the capture of any reef fish which include grouper.
